The Talented-One had a bit of a clear out the other day and found this little gem from back when we were exploring "Affective Display" with our little robotic friend. Made us think that we really should do something to revive your favourite robot-themed mildly amusing blog comic.

So, we have removed the white sheets, dusted off the old joke machine and bought a couple of new pencils.

Happy days ;)

It seems that the scientist, his robot and those who breath life into him are otherwise occupied. There seems to be a serious blockage somewhere - probably partly to do with it being summer.

Whether we do resurface after the holidays, is however an altogether stickier question. We are currently "investigating" options for how to host and market Robogeek to give a dramatic increase in our audience from the single-figure range it currently resides at.

In any case, watch this space for news and occasional humour!

Wikipedia is invaluable. I never realised until reading the wikipedia page on "The Shining" that when Jack Nicholson's character - also called Jack - utters the famous "Here's Johnny!" line, he hasn't just randomly forgotten his name but copying the famous line from the (American) Tonight Show that introduces Johnny Carson. Makes sense now!

A little birthday special. Thanks to Kirk!
Actually I am not sure I get it - but that is probably due to me being - in a jocular-comprehension sense - over-the-hill.
And, of course, if you don't get it either - maybe you too are getting old before your time. So I advise you to laugh and then go home and try to work it out in private.

PS - this post is strangely appropriate - not just because of the birthday - but also because I am off to Rome this weekend which seems to have a rather strange obsession with cats and old-ladies that husband them rather like so many goats.

Ciao ragazzi!

When we can't come up with anything vaguely intellectual, the Talented One has a tendency to get silly. And we are better off for it me thinks.

We entered RoboGeek into a Robot Comics contest organized by the Robotics and Automation Society at the IEEE ICRA-08 conference last week. There were 13 entries and ours came 2nd. The winner was a nice joke, but very much oriented to the Human-Robot Interaction community.

I don't like to be a sore looser, so I won't shout FIX! But, gosh we could have done with the $500. And ours was better anyway

You can see the entries here (Follow the link on that page). The winner was the 1st comic, top left.

... apart from the researchers. (Sorry - bad joke).

But, it is true - you've designed an all powerful robot, with amazingly strong motors, huge AI and "LASER" beam ballistics that can take out a comms satellite while playing chess with Kasparov? Yeah, but howz you gonna power the thing dude?

R. Geek, I. Asimov, F. Stein, T. Lady, G. String, M.T. Head and I.Gor

Abstract:
The development of robotic cognition and the advancement of understanding of human cognition form two of the current greatest challenges in robotics. Our aim is to develop an embodied robotic entity with human-like cognitive abilities developed over the and ontogenetic timeframe. This paper considers kinematic structures dynamic design criteria, actuator specification and selection, and detailed mechanical and electronic design. The paper concludes with tests of the performance of sample joints, and simple benchmark cognitive tests, namely: the "bottle drink test" and the "speech profanity understanding" test.

See now, Kirk is just trying to get me in trouble with my lovely wife the night before I disappear for 4 days on a boys jolly.
In my defense I did say it was the single most important thing in my life, and my wife and kids certainly wouldn't like to be described as things1!

1. Having said that though, I do tend to refer to the twins as Thing1 and Thing2, in deference to Dr. Seuss

I always think of daydreams as a very important process whereby our brains, continuously overloaded with the realities of being a grown-up, have a chance to kick-back, chill-out and get some much needed air.
